My name is Erica Khounsombath. I graduated from Roger Williams University with a double major in Sociology and Elementary Education. My studies led me to work for the Worcester Public Schools as an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapist for six years. Working with students on the Autism spectrum has taught me more than the strategies of teaching methodologies; I learned patience, empathy, teaching kindness throughout a variety of skillsets, and the importance of being a lifelong learner. The students that I had the pleasure of working with ranged from ages Kindergarten to grade 5. Each student brings a unique story; watching the student's personal progress throughout the school year is the most rewarding aspect.
My experience led me to work for a new school system as an intensive ABA Therapist, one-to-one ratio. Each student was provided with a Behavior Plan which included: academic, social/emotional, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and inclusion skills which needed to be managed daily. The children are provided with a case manager to ensure that progress was made throughout the school year. As all of the student's goals were met, data was collected and checked for accuracy.
My love for working with student's on the Autism spectrum brought me on a journey to the home setting. Through the years of working with various teachers, coordinators, and therapist to meet the needs of each child; I continued my love of teaching within the child's own environment. This format is less rigid than in a school setting, and allows children who need some freedom the most, just that. Each session with the child was play-based. Data was collected throughout each session in a format where the child was able to answer questions asked unobtrusively. The families that I have worked with have a unique cultural background. I appreciate having the opportunity to learn from working in various homes including a variety of beliefs, foods, and traditions.
I would be a great addition to any work team because I am excited about interweaving my 8 years of experience working with a wide variety of students of various abilities, cultural backgrounds, and linguistic challenges, Each child has an innate ability; learning the individual child is so important for personal growth. Intelligence is sparked from children in so many ways. When a child feels comfortable, they have the ability to grow and progress with no limits. As an ESL teacher, I will build the linguistic confidence in each child that I work with; incorporating motivating and age-appropriate activities. Allowing students to share stories and ideas, reminding the students that I believe in them, and they should always believe in themselves. Every day brings a new challenge, and that is what helps us all succeed.
