My Profile

My name is Jade Pearce and I am 20 years old. I was born in England but i grew up in South Africa. My passions including looking after children and animals, and ballet. I enjoy traveling, new experiences, interacting with people from other cultures, socialising, reading and swimming.

I spent about a year and a half looking after two boys in the UK as an au pair. (now aged 3 and 6) The boys mother is Thai, her level of English is extremely poor, and the father is American. The father was always at work so they hired me to speak proper English to the boys and teach Chase, the older boy, homework.

Since Chase's level of English had not developed into the required level for starting school, he struggled settling in and struggled emotionally and socially. As a result he received double the amount of homework other students received, which contributed to his built up frustration. It was my responsibility to tutor him and help him deal with his emotions . The fact that I was just 18 years old at the time, fresh out of high school with no further qualifications other than an NCS High School Bachelor Pass, pushed me into being creative. In order for Chase to focus snd grasp what I was teaching him, I decided to get creative and decided to make learning "fun". Although it was tricky at first, I accomplished this by teaching him little songs to help him remember what I taught him, flashcards which I got him to help me make, I would get him to make sentences out of the sight words he learnt, and when he read I would set a timer and get him to try read the book before the timer went off, which helped motivate him to "win". What also helped me with both boys was learning to understand them, and understanding that as individuals who are extremely different, they required different teaching methods.

During my unique au pair experience I got to travel, open myself up to other cultures and experiences but most importantly I learnt the importance of communication which inspired me to study child psychology and development (currently studying at the moment) and go into teaching.  

I am also a qualified TESOL teacher .
