One of my first teaching experiences was teaching TESOL at the University of Michigan for a full school year. I gained so much satisfaction from this experience that I promised myself if the opportunity presented itself again to teach TESOL I would take it. My students were husbands and wives of visiting professors and international professionals.
I am currently a school teacher in Orlando, Florida, I currently teach 5 - 12 year olds in the public school system. The subjects that I teach are English, Social Studies and Science. I really enjoy introducing my students to new ideas and new experiences. I am fortunate to live in Southern Orlando where the primary language spoken is Spanish. This past year our school had 219 students who did not speak English nor did their parents or guardians. I had 4 students in my class that spoke no to very little English but were expected to stay abreast of the courses with the other students. This presented a unique opportunity for me to spend extra time with those students and create family home work. This consisted of cassettes and labeling items being discussed on the cassette so they would be more familiar with the letters and the sound the words create. I am proud to say that my students & their families were up for the challenge and did very well.
