In my years of experience with various International NGOs, I ascertain that learning new things had the most impact on youth in the community, compared to building infrastructure and providing tangible support. In fact, learning skills that are used immediately remained an indelible knowledge. Learning is more effective with a dedicated teacher that establishes a sense of confidence for the students.
My passion to uplift the social, spiritual and intellectual condition of the student lead me to teach. English is one of my tools to create the environment of learning, as well as improvement of life skills, social interaction, and leadership development. Indeed, it is one of the most widely used languages for communication, it is critical for us to develop a lesson plan that pays more attention to improving the four skills of the students.
English is the official language in the Philippines; I’ve been using this language from the age of 5. In addition, I completed my Master’s degree in Australia and worked in the country for 4 years including writing research and evaluation of projects overseas. I am well-exposed to the native tongue and refined my skills over time.
Having equipped with level 5 TEFL, I could identify accurately the factors needed to improve the learning process of the students. My teaching approach focuses on tailoring lessons to student’s strengths and associating leadership activity. My classroom is not just academics, students will learn social, mental and practical skills that will enable them to engage naturally outside the classroom.
In the Philippines, we have a saying that “youth is the hope of our future,” and teaching them to become the hope is what adults must do. I have a genuine intention to teach and provide them the knowledge they need to become the hope of our future. I’ve been teaching academic and youth development with the YMCA for the past ten years; and watching my students becoming capable and responsible young adults are my greatest achievement.
