Dear Education Colleagues:

I am submitting this cover letter for consideration in obtaining an ESL teaching position.  I have more than ten years of full-time ESL and history teaching and education administration experience in the United States, Europe and Japan and am actively seeking full-time employment.

My name is Gabe James, and I am a resident of Boston, Massachusetts, USA. I have Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in History from the University of Hawaii. After graduating from the University of Hawai’i at Hilo in 1995, I travelled to Japan, where I worked as an English as a Second Language Instructor and Human Resources Assistant for the Japanese-American Language Institute (Nichibei Gaigo Gakuin). My teaching duties in Japan involved conducting classes six days a week in Business English, English Conversation, Children’s English and TOEFL & TOEIC Preparation. Additional duties also included curriculum development, which at one point involved assisting the school with the continued growth of the Children’s ESL Program.

Upon my return to the United States, I earned my Master of Arts degree from University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Thereafter, I taught and provided academic and education administrative services for both private and non-profit English as a Second Language and Adult Education programs. From 2015-2016, I taught English as a Second Language courses at Hawaii Community College in the Intensive English Program. I taught daily, multi-level courses in Reading, Writing, Grammar, and TOEFL Preparation.

From January 2009 to May 2015, I taught World, Pacific Islands, and Hawaiian History courses at Hawaii Community College. While teaching at the College, I utilized the University of Hawaii System’s Laulima online education platform as an important component of instruction. Hawaii County has one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the United States, and I had the wonderful opportunity to work and interact with students and colleagues of different ages, and ethnic, religious, social, cultural and economic backgrounds. In addition to managing a 27-credit per year course load at the College, my administrative responsibilities included the following: serving on personnel screening committees, participating as an active member of the College Academic Senate, serving as a member and chair of standing committees, conducting peer classroom observations, engaging in program and curriculum development/assessment projects, advising students, and actively participating in the selection and ordering of current course/text materials for the History program. Under the guidance of the Interim Director of Hawaii Community College’s Intensive English program, I assisted with the program’s accreditation process and helped supply data for annual program reviews. I was continuously involved in the pre- and post-assessment of students for all of my teaching positions.

I am a knowledgeable, patient, dynamic and engaging instructor who enjoys helping students achieve their learning objectives. I would be more than happy to interview with you in person or remotely and relocate for a viable position. Should you have any further questions about my background and experience, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of my qualifications.

Sincerely,

Gabe James
