Statement of Motivation

I am Karla van Heerden, I am 23 years old and live in Cape Town, South Africa. I am a HR Manager and I have obtained an undergraduate and postgraduate Honours degree in Psychology as well as my 120-hour TEFL Certificate.

I have decided to apply to teach because I am passionate about people and I thrive on interaction. I am drawn to teaching because you constantly interact with people instead of sitting in an office for 9 hours a day.

I have 2 years’ experience in teaching. Helping people is my passion, I am at my happiest when I am surrounded by others. I am creative, strong-willed, enthusiastic, passionate and I have excellent communication skills and, in my opinion, these are the qualities a teacher should have. I know that the educational field is where I want to be. I know it will be hard and challenging at times, but I have found that I perform at my best when I am challenged.

I have a great interest in people and I am willing and prepared to work with other people and handle problems that do not have easy solutions. I am equipped to think logically and rationally about problems through a range of processes. I am also willing to reflect on my own psychological performance and functioning and review my own personal views, perceptions, experiences and beliefs and specifically, how they may affect how I relate to others. I think learning to understand education can be extremely rewarding and satisfying.

I come from a family of four sisters and have worked with a lot of people during these past few years, all with different views, perspectives and beliefs, these experiences helped me to learn how to respect others’ differences even if I do not necessarily agree with them. I have lived in four provinces/states, attended three high schools and two universities therefore I am used to change and moving around. I’m looking forward to what the future holds and hopefully it’s in beautiful, new countries.
