Introduction:

Helping students overcome their fear of writing has been my passion since I graduated from college. With nine years of experience teaching English on various levels—from kindergarten to academia—I have developed a mission to become an expert in teaching writing: be it a sentence, a poem, a creative piece, or an academic research paper. Having completed a B.A., an M.A., and well on the way to defend my doctoral thesis in American Literature, I have gained valuable skills that I have employed as an ESL teacher, a college instructor, and an academic tutor.

In 2015, I received an offer to work at the American College of the Middle East, Kuwait, where I taught writing, grammar, and academic composition. As an instructor and a course coordinator at a college in Kuwait, I was given a fantastic opportunity to teach and create curricula and exams. I also tutored students at ACM’s Student Writing Center, where students would come to clarify their written assignments, grammar, style, or essay structure.

My teaching experience stems from a firm basis in ESL/EFL and various methodology courses I have completed. The literacy of the 21st century should accommodate student’s creativity, critical thinking, and above all, language use in context. As teachers, we accept that language teaching is best when facilitated; we must always keep in mind the cultural context and student’s individual preferences and abilities. Therefore, I always diversify the class regarding tools, tasks, activities, and approaches. Still, I also remind myself to diversify the content to cater to different student levels. I believe a powerful approach comes through inquiry and project-based and task-based learning approaches, which have proven beneficial in my classroom.

My interests involve arts, drawing, painting, music, cinematography, philosophy, traveling, and writing about cultures, which constantly contribute to diversified content in the classroom and the opportunity for students to express themselves in ways that are not only textual but involve art, creativity, and image. For instance, I held an extracurricular creative writing class and several graffiti classes for children; I have also been a volunteer at the Muscular Dystrophy Organization, where I learned the importance of giving your time and attention to those who need it.

As teachers, we ought to display integrity and intellectual depth to be qualified in the subject; however, having a fun personality and human kindness provides personality and difference. I say, “Have students impatient about your next class.” As teachers, we need to become fully developed individuals who have an encompassing view of education, updated with the most recent learning technologies. My greatest reward is leading a student to tread on a path of discovery, inquire about the underlying fabric of the world that surrounds us, and use English as a tool to express oneself. I believe that we, as teachers, have a duty—not only to teach language but also to pave the road for our students’ integrity, critical thinking, and independence in learning for a lifetime.

Experiences

English Teacher

Public School (High School, Middle School, and Primary)

August 2010 to September 2013

I assessed and evaluated students' knowledge in English, encouraged students to make presentations, participate in creative writing competitions, and read literature in English. In addition, as a headteacher, my job was to follow students' grades and organize parent meetings.

I taught English to young learners (7 - 11-year-old students) from the first to the fourth grade in a state school in Zagubica, Serbia. The curriculum was based on a communicative approach, and it was student-centered, involving a variety of songs, multimedia, games, acting, and art. In addition, as an extracurricular activity, I introduced the adapted version of F. L. Baum's The Wizard of Oz to the students at the age of 11. I am also highly experienced working with mixed age/knowledge/ability classes, as some state schools had smaller mixed-grade classes.
