I bring seventeen years’ experience of teaching English as a second language. I have had a taste of the South African Matric, a rub with the Cambridge IGCSE and a long haul with the Zimbabwe National curriculum. This has widened my scope such that I can weigh fairly the most effective ways and means of language teaching and acquisition.
Furthermore, the leadership role that I assumed as a Deputy Headmaster and even a sometime Head of Department in a boarding school gives me a head start in situations that have limitations and challenges. The boarding school administrative angle exposed me not only to classroom dynamics but also to food catering, library services, personnel (teaching and non-teaching) management and weekend programming which included sports, entertainment and spiritual activities.
Thirdly, my pioneering spirit is evidenced by being the first to teach English Literature at Advanced Level at my former school and also being instrumental in introducing the IGCSE literature at my previous duty station – Southend Secondary School. These initiatives have affirmed my pathfinder badge.
My travels and teaching experiences also developed a keen sensitivity to people of diverse cultural backgrounds. Learners who ranged from Zimbabwean middle class families who can afford a boarding school education and the affluent of Malawi who can also afford a British curriculum to the South African no-fee public school have all blended into a tapestry which has molded me into a tolerant and accommodative teacher.
Most importantly has been my edge on interactive teaching style which has encouraged students’ participation and facilitated learning with ease. This has eventually brought about flying colours to my career as I achieved excellent pass rates. Such accolades are not only a satisfaction to the educator but also a joy to all beneficiaries.
Finally, my attainment of a Post Graduate Certificate of Education more than ten years after my Bachelor’s degree shows my commitment and passion for this career. The diversity of these qualifications too, gives me a better understanding of the world of not only my content but also how to share it.
